CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Easing between Lydia’s Jeep and Andy’s car, Heath pulled in to Beryl’s driveway. Polly put her hand on the truck door.

“Thanks for doing this,” she said.

“What time do you think?”

“I’ll try to be early.”

He laughed. “That’s not what I meant. I don’t care. I was just wondering if I should leave Doug’s house early.”

“Oh. No,” she said. “Why don’t you send me a text when you’re about to leave and if I’m ready here, I’ll let you know. Otherwise, Sylvie can take me home and pick up Andrew. We’ll figure it out.”

He patted the grocery bag on the console between them. “Thanks for this.”

Polly had packed up cookies for him to take and a couple of bags of potato chips. She knew how those kids ate. She gave his hand a squeeze. “Have fun tonight. Don’t be nervous.”

“It will be fine. Thanks.”

She grabbed up her own bag of goodies, jumped out of the truck and headed for the front door. Loud music was coming from inside, something Beryl never did. Polly pressed the doorbell and waited. Heath hadn’t backed out of the driveway yet. She pressed the doorbell once more, looked back at him and shrugged. Then she tried the door and when it opened, waved goodbye and went in.

The music was incredibly loud and the hallway light was off, but lights were strobing ahead of her. She flipped it on and looked up. The bulb had been replaced with a black light bulb. “Huh,” Polly said to herself. “Gonna be one of those nights.”

She walked past Beryl’s front room and into the living room where a strobe was bouncing light off the walls. Beryl was sitting in a chair, holding a glass of wine.

Inch by inch, Polly took in the room, her eyes landing on Lydia who was seated on the sofa, smiling at her.

“Hello,” Polly yelled.

Lydia nodded, but didn’t say anything.

“Where’s Andy and Sylvie?”

Lydia nodded again.

Polly tapped her ear. “I can’t hear anything,” she yelled. “Can we turn the music down?”

Beryl jumped up and went down the short hallway to the kitchen. In just a moment, she returned with another glass of wine and handed it to Polly.

Polly grabbed Beryl’s wrist. “I can’t hear anything.”

Beryl nodded and sat back down.

“This is a little freaky.” Polly rubbed her forehead and then jumped when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She spun around to see Sylvie standing there, her eyes big.

“What’s going on?” Sylvie asked, yelling into Polly’s ear.

“I don’t know. They aren’t talking,” Polly yelled back.

Beryl jumped up again and disappeared into the kitchen, then returned with another glass of wine, which she handed to Sylvie.

“Where’s Andy?” Sylvie asked Polly.

This yelling thing was getting old, but Beryl and Lydia didn’t seem flustered in the least.

Andy came up the stairs from the basement, her face lighting up at the sight of Sylvie and Polly. She glanced at Lydia and Beryl and her face broke into a grin.

“Drink up,” she yelled at Polly. “Trust me. The whole glass.”

Polly wrinkled her forehead and Andy mimed pouring back a drink.
